Music games make up one of the most enjoyed genres on touchscreen devices. And there’s a good reason for that — the gameplay is just right for the job. The simple act of tapping a note at the right time has become an art form that we see reflected in rhythm games. We’d like to pay tribute to these types of games that have been around since the 70s, with a selection of the best rhythm video games for Android in 2022. Read on to find a list of games of all different styles and that are also available for free.
Follow the rhythm from your Android!
NEXT Music
While rhythm games have been around for a long time, no one can deny the enormous influence Guitar Hero has had on the genre. With the appearance of the game from Harmonix, numerous games have tried to follow in its footsteps with a similar style. But remember, they didn’t invent this type of game — they just helped make it popular in western countries. We would describe NEXT Music as the Guitar Hero for Android given that it’s one of the few rhythm games that offers a huge collection of hit music. [Download]
Deemo
Rayark is one of the most interesting companies in the music game genre. This Taiwanese developer has three authentic rhythm classics for mobile devices: Cytus, VOEZ y Deemo. We’ve chosen this game because its gorgeous graphics have us mesmerized. While we may have seen its gameplay a hundred times before (tapping the music notes that fall from the upper part of the screen), the fairy tale story that’s tied into the game gives it an original and different focus. Not to mention the practically endless list of songs available to play. [Download]
Music Racer
This isn’t the first time we’ve mentioned Music Racer, but we just can’t get enough of this creation from Audiosurf. It’s a fun musical arcade game where you play along using songs on your device and it will put your reflexes to the test as you dodge obstacles without losing your cool. These obstacles will be put in your path according to the rhythm of the song that’s playing, so you can choose how to enjoy Music Racer according to the music you feel like listening to. [Download]
RIDE ZERO
While the vast majority of rhythm games have you tap the game at the exact right moment, RIDE ZERO camouflages this fact by disguising the game as a shmup. Your objective is to defeat all the enemies who attack you, but the way to do this is by returning their shots to the beat. It’s a really original title that puts a fresh spin on a genre that tends to be a bit repetitive. [Download]
DJMAX TECHNIKA Q
The DJMAX saga has been around since 2004, creating rhythm games that stand out from the rest thanks to their experimental music and beautiful visuals from Korean artists. This Android installment is unique due to its perspective: the music notes you have to tap appear horizontally, so you have to watch both sides of the screen to tap the buttons on both the left and right sides of the screen. It’s also one of the few examples from the genre that has animated backgrounds on the screen. [Download]
LoveLive School idol festival
The transfer of virtual idols to musical videogames is all-out and the popularity of these games, especially in Japan, has taken the genre to a completely new dimension in terms of fame. We lose count of the enormous number of titles in this subgenre, but Love Live! School Idol Festival is one of our favorites. It’s a game that’s been succeeding on mobile devices since 2014 thanks to its mix between visual novel and rhythm game. But don’t let it fool you with its kawaii looks: it’s a real challenge due to the fact that you need to watch 9 different places where the notes might land. [Download]
Geometry Dash SubZero
Talking about Geometry Dash means discussing one of the sagas that has managed to take full advantage of the reach of YouTubers. It’s an excessively difficult platformer that offers little gratification. Thus, it’s found its niche in the world of gameplay videos and the reactions of everyone who plays it. This doesn’t take away from the fact that it’s an entertaining game with great graphics that we’ll keep coming back to in order to get a taste of precious victory. We’ve chosen Geometry Dash SubZero since it’s the latest installment in this saga that makes us suffer. [Download]
Lost in Harmony
We could have put together a list made up of just clear-cut, classic rhythm games. This list could go on for days, in fact, with most of them offering the utmost in quality. However, we love when games mashup their genres and Lost in Harmony is a game that we never get tired of recommending. This gem brings together elements of endless runners with music games all wrapped up in a beautiful story that just might squeeze a tear or two out of many players. [Download]
BanG Dream! Girls Band Party!
We’re back to talking about virtual idols with the new game from the BanG Dream! franchise. It’s a title that will have you hooked for hours on end thanks to its extensive concept and the enormous number of songs available to enjoy. Its mix between a visual novel and classic rhythm game is gratifying thanks to its development since the two parts go hand in hand in order to advance. Plus, it offers a musical selection packed with versions of legendary hits from different anime series. Don’t blame us when you can’t get that guren no yumiyaaaaa out of your head. [Download]
Beat Fire
Shooting and rhythm go hand in hand in Beat Fire. In this simple video game you’ll need to pull the trigger to intercept each of the musical notes that fall from the upper area of the interface. You will mainly come across songs within the electronic genre, which will increase the dynamism in each challenge. However, as you level up, you will unlock songs from other styles. This is, without a doubt, one of the best rhythm games to de-stress. [Download]
Queen: Rock Tour
Imagine being able to join Queen, the band led by the iconic Freddie Mercury, during one of their tours around the world. This is now possible thanks to Queen: Rock Tour. In this rhythm game, you will travel through the different cities where the legendary group will be performing. The gameplay is the usual: basically, you will be clicking on the different notes to the beat of songs like “I Want to Break Free”, “Bohemian Rhapsody” or “Somebody to Love”. Can you think of a better plan? [Download]
LIT killah
Argentine singer LIT Killah also has a rhythm game of his own. In this title, you will have to help the young man to improvise many of his songs. To do this, you’ll press the keys of a piano at the right moment in order for each composition to flow. As if you were part of the MAWZ Tour, in each level you will have to do your best on the stage to get the highest score. [Download]
Arcaea New Dimension
Here we find a game of anime aesthetics that makes a difference thanks to its beautiful visuals. The scenarios on which the notes will fall include very pleasing shades and shapes. In terms of mechanics, nothing new: clicking on each of the chords as fast as you can will be the main challenge to score and unlock new levels. [Descargar]
Hatsune Miku: Colorful Stage!
Imagine being a fan of a K-pop star who doesn’t really exist. In Japan, there is still a real fever for software-produced music, thanks in part to Crypton Future Media’s daring to bring a virtual singer to life. The vocaloid Hatsune Miku is here to stay on stage and now you can join her in Hatsune Miku: Colorful Stage! This Sega title challenges us to play multiple keys at the right time to compose authentic hits, such as “Tell Your World” or “Bring It On”. [Descargar]
Hatsune Miku – Tap Wonder
But Hatsune Miku: Colorful Stage! is not the only title with a virtual singer as its main character. Hatsune Miku – Tap Wonder is another similar game, with a vertical orientation of the screen, in which you’ll have to animate the vocaloid’s concerts. In addition, as you level up, you will be able to unlock other software-developed artists, such as Kagamine Rin, Kagamine Len, KAITO or MEIKO. [Download]
Tokyo 7th Sisters
Tokyo 7th Sisters takes us into the universe of a music agency called “777”, dedicated to managing the musical careers of various K-pop bands. This video game introduces a group of seven sisters who will have to defend themselves on each stage to please their audience. As per traditional gameplay of the best rhythm games, during each song, you will need to click on the corresponding keys to complete each composition and thus get the highest score. [Download]
