This is the year we finally get a new Mortal Kombat game for phones: Mortal Kombat: Onslaught. It’s a project that strays from traditional fighting gameplay and, instead, offers a format that leans more toward adventure and role-playing. As a result, the game tells a renewed story, based on the events of the main saga. Below, we’ll tell you exactly how this new mobile game fits into the Mortal Kombat timeline.

What is Mortal Kombat Onslaught?

Mortal Kombat: Onslaught is a new game from the famous fighting saga from NetherRealm Studios and Warner Bros. In this case, instead of solo fighting, this new game is focused on team-based combat in real-time but with an important tactical component. Several classic characters from the saga will face off in almost-automatic battles. If you win, you’ll be able to upgrade your skills, unlock new fighters, etc. The game also includes cinematics with high-quality graphics.

The story of Mortal Kombat Onslaught: new reboot with Shinnok

In Mortal Kombat: Onslaught you’ll be reacquainted with Shinnok, the ancient fallen god, as the main bad guy in the story. As usual, his goal is to get enough power to regain his lost status. However, this time, it will be a little more complicated, since the relic that stored that power has been destroyed and the pieces have ended up scattered throughout the realms of Mortal Kombat.

Knowing this, Shinnok will entrust his two most powerful minions, Quan Chi and Scorpion, to recover these lost objects. This is where the adventure begins, which will take you on a quest to the kingdoms of the saga, searching for these fragments that hold Shinnok’s power. However, it won’t be easy since you won’t be the only one looking for these objects.

Where does Onslaught fit into the Mortal Kombat timeline?

Nowadays, between multiverses and time jumps, Mortal Kombat’s timeline can be a bit confusing. That’s why it can be complicated to fit Mortal Kombat: Onslaught into it, since it seems that the phone game will also be jumping between lines as needed, according to the script. What is clear is that the start of the plot of this new game fits after the first tournament and before the invasion of Shinnok in Mortal Kombat 4. This means that there will be characters who have not yet fully developed their plot, although you can also expect changes in certain key points to align everything.

Mortal Kombat: Onslaught Release Date

NetherRealm Studios and Warner Bros. have not yet confirmed an exact release date for Mortal Kombat Onslaught on phones, although we do know that it will be available sometime in 2023. That said, the testing phase has already begun in some territories and it is possible to download its APK for free to keep an eye on its current progress and try out its offline modes, as well as see first-hand what the story of this new Mortal Kombat is like (as long as your device meets the game’s minimum requirements).
