It’s a strange game, different from the rest, that’s become a success outside Japan and has proven that there still is, in fact, a sliver of hope for the videogame world. Now, Amazing Katamari Damacy is the excellent successor that brings the originality of the franchise to smartphones. It’s undoubtedly one of the most refreshing endless runners that we’ve seen in a long, long time.
Keita Takahashi, the gifted creator of Katamari Damacy, may not have anything to do with the franchise anymore, but Amazing Katamari Damacy feels like just another great installment. It’s a videogame that makes you feel the magic of the saga in every pixel of the screen on any Android device. You may think it’s “just another endless runner” but you couldn’t be more wrong. While your objective may be to survive as long as possible, the game includes other distinctive features that really make it shine: free horizontal controls and the need to collect every single object your katamari can carry to make it grow bigger and bigger.
For anyone who’s unfamiliar with the saga, your objective is to build giant ball (called a “katamari”) that collects everything it touches. With some skill, you can increase the size of your ball to unbelievable magnitudes. And that’s exactly what you have to do in this original endless runner. If you’ve ever played this type of game before, and you’re used to moving between set lanes with swipes, then the controls in Amazing Katamari Damacy may take a little getting used to. You have total freedom of movement horizontally, but you have to swipe up to jump over obstacles that you can’t pick up. Along the way, you’ll collect all sorts of objects: paper clips, erasers, bricks … and even animals or the typical barricades on either side of you. It’s really a homerun of a game that breathes new life into an over-saturated genre.
Amazing Katamari Damacy is just that … amazing. We could also mention that you’ll travel though colorful worlds, that you can get help from your cousins to get powerups, that you have to help the King of All Cosmos to win the heart of the Queen, and an endless list of other fun facts. But what we really want you to do is download it and play it to the end. Forget about the disappointing Tap My Katamari and enjoy the legendary melodies created by Yuu Miyake.
