So-called survival games have been booming in the gaming world for a while now in a hodgepodge of genres in which you live with a noose around your neck trying to survive one day at a time. Shadows of Kurgansk is a new addition to this line of games that immerses you in a zombie-plagued post-apocalyptic world, complete with quite high production values for an Android title. Welcome to the Zone.
Shadows of Kurgansk drops you into an alluring 3D world in first person where your aim is to explore your environment while trying to survive every passing day in the face of all the dangers that assail you. To do it you’ve got to collect all kinds of objects to manufacture weapons and tools and build a shelter to endure this hostile environment. That said, don’t forget that when the night comes you’ve got to make a bonfire to deter the zombies trying to murder you.
This game carries on the tradition begun by the Soviet film director Andréi Tarkovski with his movie Stalker where we witnessed the birth of a place called “the Zone,” in a story inspired by the novel Roadside Picnic by Arkadi and Borís Strugatski. This nearly mythological place also makes an appearance in the S.T.A.L.K.E.R. saga, from which Shadows of Kurgansk borrows a bunch of ideas, like the fact that you face anomalies and discover artifacts. In broad terms we could even say that this free Android game is a sort of small-scale S.T.A.L.K.E.R.
Shadows of Kurgansk does a good job meshing the standard survival gameplays made so popular by Minecraft with elements from RPGs, like leveling up your skills with every day you manage to stay alive. It’s a super entertaining game that will keep you in continual tension due to the enemies that stalk you at unexpected times.
