King is a massive company with a strange way of releasing its games in recent times. Many of its prototypes spend years in closed beta available only in certain countries. However, in many cases, they end up forgotten or re-released at a later time with a different name. Knights of Fury (previously known as Knight’s Fury) is a game developed by the studio Midoki under King’s brand. The game strays far from the formula we’re used to seeing, offering an action game with tones of RPG. The Android version was recently released in Malaysia, but you can play it right now without any sort of geographic limitation.
Knights of Fury offers a gameplay that’s inevitably similar to Infinity Blade from Chair Entertainment and Epic Games, only in this case, the combats aren’t completely in real time. There are also turns where you can inflict attack chains on enemies. The controls are incredibly simple. You just have to tap on an enemy to attack, and if you do so repeatedly, then you’ll get combos. As a result, for example, you can jump from one enemy to another by swiping horizontally during the string of hits. Easy, but more than enjoyable – especially when coupled with game’s the attractive graphics.
The part that’s taken straight out of King’s playbook is the advancement system, with an enormous interconnected map where you have to complete levels one at a time to continue on advancing. In addition to the combats themselves, you’ll pass through cities where you can buy equipment, find alternative routes to reach special locations, and find more difficult combats against more powerful enemies. The typical energy bar is present, and the more challenges you overcome, the faster it will run out. As a result, you’ll have to wait real time for it to recharge or visit the in-game store to get more with real money. Nothing we haven’t seen before.
There’s more than meets the eye in this game. You’ll have to manage inventory and equipment, and can level up your character and the pieces of equipment using special resources that you’ll get along your journey. Plus, the enormous gauntlet that you sport from the beginning of the adventure will let you summon other characters which you’ll collect as you go and will have different extra abilities.
Knights of Fury is a pleasant surprise for Android users. Not only for the fact that King has opted for a different formula than the one we’ve seen a million times, but because the game itself is really interesting. It offers high production values and the perfect balance in its formula.
