WhatsApp announced great news in early 2015 when coming out with their official web client release that allowed users to access their Whatsapp instant messaging account from any PC regardless of its architecture—and without the need to fall back on Android emulators. After a long wait, they’ve finally come up with the next step, offering an official desktop client for both Windows and Mac that—while still based on the browser version—makes life a lot easier for everyone.
Running it is easy, just follow the exact same steps as installing the web client. Capture the QR code that pops up on your screen in order to pair the program with your smartphone that should already be running WhatsApp. To do so, once you’re in your chat window, open the sidebar in the upper right hand corner and access WhatsApp Web. Tap there and scan the QR code with your device camera. Consequently, we’re facing the same limitation as before in terms of the need to have the app installed on your smartphone and your mobile data activated in order to use WhatsApp on your desktop.
Essentially, you get an exact copy of the browser version, which is why all its main functions have been switched over including sending and receiving local files and capturing videos and images from within the app using your webcam, if there’s one available.
Seems like WhatsApp users will just have to keep scraping by with whatever crumbs they throw our way. More so when set against competitors—Telegram, you’re the apple of my eye—who have offered all of these features, and then some, since way back when.. At the end of the day, it all comes down to priorities.
