If you’ve played Genshin Impact, the hit open-world RPG from HoYoverse (formerly known as miHoYo), you’ll know that characters have their own level that can be increased based on materials. This experience meter is not the same as the Adventure Rank since one measures the level of each character and the other measures the level of your account in general. Even so, both are related— to increase the character level, you need to increase the Adventure Rank. Here’s how it works.
What is the character level used for in Genshin Impact?
Before we begin, you may be wondering what the point of leveling up Genshin Impact characters is and if it is not enough to simply improve the Adventure Rank. The answer is no because character leveling is essential to enhance your heroes individually. It improves their attributes and stats (life, defense, and attack) and gives them new passive abilities by increasing their maximum level cap.
How do I level up my character?
A fundamental aspect you should know about the character level of Genshin Impact is that the heroes hardly gain experience by fighting, but you must manually raise their level by spending materials such as Wanderer’s Advice, Adventurer’s Experience, or Hero’s Wit. Once these materials have been obtained, you must go to the Characters menu and look for the Ascend button to manually raise the character’s level.
How can I increase the maximum level of the characters in Genshin Impact?
Let’s get to the heart of the matter. Genshin Impact characters have a maximum level limit that can be increased according to your Adventure Rank. As soon as you start playing, you will have the possibility of raising the characters up to level 20, but to continue advancing, you will need to increase your rank and unlock new limits.
This process is known as “Character Ascension”. When a character has reached its maximum level cap, you can upgrade to the next stage, which will increase its level cap. This can be done up to six times— just enough to reach level 90 with each character. However, in each Character Ascension, you will need a series of materials (indicated by the game) and a level of Adventure Rank, which you can consult below:
- Base level: characters start at level 0 and can be upgraded up to level 20.
- First Ascension: when you reach Adventure Rank 15, you can upgrade the character to level 40.
- Second Ascension: when you reach Adventure Rank 25, you can upgrade the character to level 50.
- Third Ascension: when you reach Adventure Rank 30, you can upgrade the character to level 60.
- Fourth Ascension: when you reach Adventure Rank 35, you can upgrade the character to level 70.
- Fifth Ascension: when you reach Adventure Rank 40, you can upgrade the character to level 80.
- Sixth Ascension: when you reach Adventure Rank 45, you can upgrade the character to level 90.
Where can I get the materials for Character Ascension?
When you start worrying about leveling up the Genshin Impact characters, it will be relatively easy to get the materials. The items the game asks you to level up for the first ascents can be found in souvenir stores, or you can get them by fighting against standard bosses.
As you progress and reach the following stages of Character Ascension, you will have to search for crystals by fighting against Elite bosses. Later, you can use alchemy to obtain the necessary materials. The good news is that the materials you will be asked for match your character’s element, so you shouldn’t have any problems if you are following the main mission.
