If you’re a TV series-super fan, or have been waiting for the premier of a movie for several months, you should be afraid of that monster lurking around the corner: spoilers. This is a danger that increases even more if you’re not the only one in your group of friends that is anxiously waiting for the next season of Breaking Bad or Game of Thrones to come out, as you might see people’s opinions about them on your Facebook wall or Twitter, or even pictures of the latest episode. Here we explain how to be in control spoiler alerts on social networks.
If you love movies and TV shows, then you hate spoilers. As of right now you still can’t keep your friends from spoiling the end of a movie for you when you’re hanging out, but you can block their comments on Facebook or hide their tweets that mention the TV show you just started getting into. But how? Simple. The answer is the Silencer extension for Google Chrome.
Silencer is an extension that allows you to select specific key words and phrases to hide from social networks in which they appear. It’s that easy. All you TV-show lovers have to do is install it on Chrome, as it is still not available for other browsers, and click on the icon to start censoring the “inappropriate” content.
This extension is noteworthy because it includes a series of databases that have the most popular TV shows of the time with the main keywords to block already there for you so you don’t have to choose them manually. For example, if you choose to censore Dexter, there will be 36 key words and phrases that will be blocked from your social networks.
Also, to make sure that all references to the show you are following are hidden from you, not only can you control the key words or phrases in tweets, but you can also block hashtags so you’ll read absolutely nothing about the topic.
“In the last five years we have been able to greatly increase our ability to hide this type of content from people, but there is still a long way to go,” said Zack Shapiro, creator of Silencer, in an interview. “For example, imagine that I want to follow a certain person on Twitter, but all they do is talk about a certain subject that I’m not interested in at all. We wanted to find a way for people to modify their Internet experience to their liking.”
Silencer is an excellent tool for filtering the avalanche of spoilers that people experience on social networks. It is incredibly easy to set up, and it offers results you can see immediately. So, if you are needing to hide the spoilers of your favorite TV show, or you want to avoid the hordes of Justin Bieber fans that are filling up the twittersphere with hashtags, this Chrome extension is indispensable.
