The mobile app business is becoming more and more profitable for many companies. There are millions of apps released every year for mobile devices, but only a few get the honor of making the list of the top earners. Based on a study published by Sensor Tower, we’re here to review the Android apps with the highest revenue at the moment.
Pokémon GO leads the pack with the highest revenue
It’s worth pointing out that of the top 10 Android apps with the most revenue, seven of them are games. Since its release in 2016, Pokémon GO is the most profitable app on this operating system. This title developed by Niantic managed to reach a cool $1.8 billion in profits, between downloads on both the Play Store and App Store. This number grows at a rate of about $2 million per day and in the Google store alone, reached $71.03 million in just the month of June. Japan and the USA are two of the countries where the augmented reality game has generated the most profits. It seems like the user policy changes are managing to keep the game going strong.
The second most profitable Android game on a global level is Candy Crush Saga. The title, developed by King, has been entertaining millions of users as they match candies nonstop. The earnings of the franchise hover right around $4 million dollars a day, and in July 2018, Candy Crush Saga alone earned $41.6 million. It’s worth mentioning that this game earns 62% of the profits for the entire Candy Crush trilogy, ahead of Candy Crush Soda Saga and Candy Crush Jelly Saga.
Dragon Ball battles round off the profits podium
The other game that proudly holds a place on the profits podium is Dragon Ball Z Dokkan Battle. The action title with hints of strategy, created by Bandai Namco, managed to surpass the $1 billion mark in 2015. In July of 2018, the combats between Dragon Ball characters generated a profit of $29.22 million in the market.
However, we can’t overlook how far Clash of Clans has come in terms of revenue. The most famous real-time strategy title on Android managed to become the fourth most profitable game in July, racking in a total of $19.3 million. And after Supercell released Clash Royale, the Finnish company absorbed by Tencent surpassed $800 million in profits in 2017.
Tinder is the most profitable non-game app
Nowadays, more and more people are using their smartphones to meet new people. Tinder is the dating app with the most users around the world and its numbers show it. According to the company’s own information, the app has 1.6 billion swipes per day, more than 20 billion matches in all, and it’s already present in over 190 countries. With big numbers like this, Tinder reached $31.35 million in revenue in 2018. In just Google Play alone, the app has over 100 million downloads.
All these numbers put Tinder ahead of Pandora Music. The music app is the closest world competitor with a revenue of $20.41 million. However, the download restrictions it has in some European countries like Spain, mean that it can’t follow the lead of its competitor.
It’s also worth mentioning the progression of an app like Slotomania. The great variety of possibilities this casino app offers has turned it into one of the most profitable apps. It’s revenue in 2018 reached $18.13 million, surpassing games like Gardenscapes and Lords Mobile.
The market just keeps growing
The nearly four million apps available for Android mean that the market for apps and games for smartphones is becoming increasingly profitable. In fact, according to the analyses conducted by Sensor Tower, it’s expected that by 2022 the number of app downloads will go from 205.4 billion in 2018 to 258.2 billion in 2022. Only time will tell which app will be earning the most revenue by then.
