Maldita Castilla
Locomalito is an altruistic developer from Spain who makes high quality video games. This is his latest work, a homage to the classic Ghosts n’ Goblins, starring the Knight Don Ramiro on his crusade to save the village of Tolomera from the King of all that is evil. It is an arcade game as difficult as it is fun, whose major selling point is that it comes off as a game made 20 years ago.

CraftFighters
We all know about the tremendous success that the independent video game Minecraft is having, which has created a frenzy for the ability to create practically anything with little blocks. CraftFighters is a consequence of this new craze, but it takes its iconic characters to a completely different genre. Creepers, pigs, and zombies are just some of the characters you can control in this one-on-one fighting game.

Street Fighter x Megaman
This year is the 25th anniversary of the famous Capcom character Megaman. To celebrate, a fan has created this video game that uses the same style from the saga, mixing it with Street Fighter, another known franchise from the same company. The interesting thing about this is that Capcom itself collaborated with the developer and has advertised the game without putting up any obstacles. How great it would be if all videogame companies had that same spirit.

Renegade X: Black Dawn
Many people associate free, independent games with poor quality work and ancient pixelated graphics. Renegade X breaks this perception with a first-person shooter in a Command & Conquer environment that uses Unreal Engine 3. After five years of development, what initially began as an Unreal Tournament mod has ended up being a completely independent (and surprisingly free) game.

Zineth
This is a fun experiment that is hard to describe. It’s a psychedelic rollerblading game in which you have to go through impossibly difficult levels while jumping, and do all kinds of tricks while trying to complete missions that are assigned to you. It’s like Jet Set Radio, but on drugs. Visually, it is a bit unsettling, but it really captures the sensation of speed and vertigo in huge environments.

The previously mentioned Megaman and Street Fighter game proves that mashups are popular right now in the world of videogames. In this case, the two very different concepts of Super Mario Bros. and the portal gun from Portal join forces, providing our plumber protagonist the famous weapon from the Valve game. Now you can beat these 2D levels using portals, which you can place anywhere in the environment.

They Came from Verminest
Just like Maldita Castilla, this is another videogame that Locomalito has released this year, paying homage in this case to those classic videogames aimed around killing aliens from the 70’s and early 80’s, such as Space Invaders, Galaga, and Galaxian. It is just as difficult as these games, and has the same style graphics. It is a true pearl for arcade enthusiasts.

A Nation of Wind
A strategy and action game where you control a ship through levels in which you have to conquer various territories. You can construct buildings of all kinds to help you establish colonies, which will provide you with the resources and skills necessary to becoming more powerful, all the while destroying enemies that come out to attack you. It is a fusion of those types of games that keep you glued to your screen for hours without even realizing it.

Bit of War
A demake is a version of a current videogame that makes it seem as if it were from an older generation. In this case, the main character is Kratos, but pixelated, as if God of War had come out 20 years ago. So, Sony’s famous hack and slash transforms into a platform action game in 2D that, although infinitely more simple than the original, still has its way of being fun. Just don’t judge this book by its cover.

Black Mesa
We have left the most impressive of the year for last. The famous videogame Half Life was first released in 1998. Six years later, its second installment was delivered, which, in addition to adding to the exciting adventure of Gordon Freeman, had improved graphics thanks to the famous engine Source from Valve. Now, after years of development, a group of fans has created a remake of the first version using said game engine, with completely renovated graphics and many additions that weren’t in the original game. You have to have one of Valve’s games that uses Source in order to play Black Mesa, but in today’s world, who doesn’t have at least one of their greatest games?
