Virtualbox is undoubtedly the king of virtualization on desktop computers alongside the paid alternative VMWare. Now the former has just launched its new version 4.3, which among other improvements now supports the operating systems Windows Server 2012 R2, Mac OS X 10.9 and even new Windows 8.1, besides offering multitouch support and new integrated tools like a video recorder.
Virtualbox is a software the lets you emulate one operating system inside another, a virtual PC running inside your machine that you can customize however you wish by assigning the desired amount of your system resources to this miniature nested computer. Thanks to this technology you can perfectly run a Linux distro from a screen within Windows. You can read a bit more about this here.
The new version has been brought up to date with new characteristics focused on emulating most of the currently prevalent operating systems as well as their touchscreen versions. Thus, it’s now possible to configure the emulation of a touchscreen with multitouch support, as is the case with Windows 8, which you can make compatible with USB tablets so that they run Windows 8’s multitouch functions.
The other big novelty is the inclusion of a tool to capture video from the virtualized operating systems, allowing you to configure the output resolution (up to 1920 × 1080), the number of frames per second, the degree of image compression, or the personalization and simultaneous capture of multimonitor machines as desired.
In addition, the program has seen the addition of many other improvements, which run the gamut from the purely aesthetic (with changes to the interface and the configuration menus) to advanced features in areas such as network virtualization (with the capacity to translate NAT directions to be able to create network environments among several simultaneously virtualized systems).
