Hungry Dragon, the game of ravenous mystical creatures from Ubisoft, challenges players to survive for as long as possible while exploring a large open environment brimming with food and secrets, but also enemies, traps, and other dangers. There are those who are simply out to burn anything and everything with their dragon, but if you want to actually advance in the game, you’ll need to be aware of certain basic aspects. Read on to discover important tips to help you stay alive for as long as possible in Hungry Dragon.

What is Hungry Dragon?

Hungry Dragon is an exploration and action game with a lateral perspective. You control a dragon that you can move freely throughout the setting. To keep your dragon alive, you’ll need to hunt larger prey that will give you energy and life when needed. The game is free-to-play, which means that although it’s technically free, it offers in-app purchases that allow you to access new dragons, upgrades, costumes, and pets to accompany you throughout the game.

What’s the objective of the game?

Your goal in Hungry Dragon is to stay alive for as long as possible and get as many points as you can. Your dragon will get weaker as the game goes on since it needs to eat constantly in order to keep up its energy, and resources are limited. In addition, the number of areas you’re able to reach will depend on the size of your dragon— as you increase in size, the number of places you can access will also increase. To survive as long as possible, you have to try to keep both the life and energy bars full at all times in order to keep your dragon in good health.

8 key tips for surviving as long as possible in Hungry Dragon

Don’t stop eating

It may seem obvious enough, but in the heat of the game, it’s possible to forget one of the most fundamental aspects of Hungry Dragon: the dragon needs to eat in order to keep flying. Think of food as fuel: when it runs out, the game’s over. Always look for food to put in your mouth, and remember that it’s better to play it safe than to take a risk and start all over from scratch. Besides, the more destruction you cause, the higher the points multiplier will be.

Don’t get trigger happy with the boost button

In addition to the basic dragon moves, in Hungry Dragon, you have an extra button to gain boost. It’s not unusual to see people tapping it repeatedly, but that doesn’t help: save the boost for when you really need it, either to catch an elusive prey or to reach an area that’s farther away than you originally thought; if you use it too much, you’ll end up going slower and missing important opportunities.

Watch out for traps

The map in Hungry Dragon is full of hidden dangers right off the bat. When you go flying through the setting, you need to remember that many of the elements you hit will hurt your dragon, even if it doesn’t seem like it. Be careful with the traps because they can reduce your life without you even realizing it. The trick is to stay away from the elements that make your dragon turn red because that’s the sign that they’re reducing your health level.

Unlock the minimap

The Hungry Dragon map is always the same, but the rewards and bonuses change position. If you want to know where they are, you’ll have to unlock the map in each game, and we recommend doing so right at the beginning. How do you unlock it? It can be done both on the screen before the game and during the game and only requires you to watch an ad or pay a certain amount for it. The truth is that it’s extremely useful, and it’s worth unlocking it before even attempting to survive.

Use pets and costumes

Both the pets and costumes are a fundamental part of playing Hungry Dragon, and they’re not just for looks. In the first case, you can get extra help by equipping your dragon with pets that you unlock by hatching eggs. These can give you abilities like shooting fireballs or attracting prey. Meanwhile, in the second case, you can improve by equipping your dragon with costumes, such as improved speed or a score multiplier.

Turn on the tilt controls

The default control system in Hungry Dragon lets you control your dragon with a virtual joystick that you move on the left side of the screen. However, the settings menu also gives you the option to turn on the tilt control option: while some people consider it to be a more complicated system to control, the truth is that it makes it possible to complete a series of movements in a more agile and fast way than the traditional controls. If you can get the hang of it, it’s definitely worth using it.

Participate in tournaments

When you level up, you’ll unlock the option to participate in a tournament through the Temple, something we recommend you do as you’ll be able to get special rewards (like purple or golden eggs) depending on your position. The goal is to get the highest score possible, and playing field is leveled by giving all participants a similar costume and pet. You’ll be able to register for a tournament for free every two hours.

Collect daily treasures

As in many other free-to-play games, Hungry Dragon rewards daily access with goodies that improve according to the streak you’ve been on. In other words, the more days you play in a row, the better the rewards will be. Even if you don’t plan on playing every day, we recommend you at least open the game to claim the daily treasures to get these free bonuses.

How to get better dragons in Hungry Dragon

One of the most important things in Hungry Dragon is to understand its progress system and unlock dragons since the characters you get aren’t simply superficial avatars (like what happens in many other free-to-play games), but they actually completely change the way you can play and how far you can advance. So, as you play, you’ll unlock new dragons you need to keep playing and advancing— basically an endless cycle that makes for many hours of gameplay. In addition, each of the full lists of dragons in Hungry Dragon has its own level that can be upgraded, so keep that in mind as well.
