RPGs seem to have found their perfect habitat on Android and it’d be a mammoth task to try to name every single successful game. Even more so if you start talking about all the games that aren’t translated to western languages. Luckily, many of these games end up being brought to the rest of the world eventually, like in the case of the spectacular Onmyoji. This JRPG has become one of the most played titles in Asia, racking up more than 200 million downloads since its release.
Onmyoji follows the standard pattern of typical RPGs found on Android. It has a story mode for one player, although its real potential resides in the combats against other players: turn-based confrontations where you have to launch the best team you have and is made up of spirits called “shikigami” based on intricate Japanese folklore. This is something that we’ve already seen previously in the Shin Megami Tensei saga.
To summon these shikigami you have to collect the typical fragments that make up their invocation. To do this, you need to make it through story mode via minigames or passing though the typical gacha system where you’ll invoke these spirits. In addition to summoning these spirits (which, by the way, there are tons to collect), you can improve them and level them up so they don’t get left behind in combats against other players. It’s not exactly groundbreaking, but at least Onmyoji offers a really fantastic overall package: its audiovisual production is outstanding and it offers the legendary Shigeru Umebayashi (In the Mood for Love, House of Flying Daggers) for the soundtrack.
Onmyoji is a complete JRPG that provides hours upon hours of entertainment. Although it centers around PvP, its story mode is nice and long and offers you tons of characters from Japanese mythology with all their intricate details. It’s a game where you can get your fill of reading and enjoying stupendous Japanese dubbing. A great game to start out 2018 on the right foot. Although it’s not yet available everywhere in the world, you can download it right now from Uptodown without any geographic restrictions.
