It’s no secret that Pokémon GO marked a turning point in the world of mobile video games and, more specifically, in those that utilize augmented reality (AR). Of course, Pokémon GO wasn’t the first of these video games, but it was the first to bring them to the general public and thus, become one of the most successful games of all time. Therefore, it’s not surprising that there are many others who have wanted to follow in its wake.

Jurassic World Alive, Harry Potter: Wizards Unite, Angry Birds AR and Minecraft Earth are just a few examples of works by major brands that have tried (in most cases without much success) to imitate Pokémon GO. However, this year a new contender has thrown its hat into the ring, and it’s done so with one of the most popular brands behind it. We’re talking about Marvel World of Heroes, the Pokémon GO-style game that includes the most famous superheroes from comics and movies.

What is Marvel World of Heroes?

Marvel World of Heroes is a completely new game for smartphones, based on augmented reality technology. Or in other words, it takes the Marvel superhero world and adapts it to create a classic Pokémon GO-style game.

Marvel World of Heroes puts you in the shoes of your very own superhero (which you can create and customize). You’ll have to physically move your superhero around your city to “patrol and fight crime.” Plus, just like in Pokémon GO, the game includes a cooperative component to encourage you to join forces with your friends and neighbors in these crime-fighting patrols. You’ll find the official description and trailer for the game below:

“Become a Marvel Super Hero in the real world. Create your own hero, patrol your neighborhood to foil crimes, and team up with your friends as well as iconic Marvel heroes such as Spider-Man, Captain America, and Wolverine to save the Multiverse!”

For the time being, there aren’t many more details available, as the official announcement was made only a few months ago. There aren’t any specific details about gameplay or progression yet, but much more is expected to become available over the next few months.

Why should you pay attention to Marvel World of Heroes?

There are a lot of augmented reality games out there that try to replicate the success of Pokémon GO. So what is it about Marvel World of Heroes that makes it more likely to succeed than all the rest?

The answer is simple: its developers and the brand they represent. Marvel World of Heroes doesn’t only take advantage of characters and narratives from one of the most popular universes of recent times (thanks to the success of The Avengers), but it also has Niantic developing it. The very same creators who brought us Pokémon GO are back at it again, with another world-class brand.

Only time will tell what the outcome will be, but Marvel World of Heroes aims to be the first major augmented reality game since the launch of Pokémon GO. We’ll see if it lives up to the hype.

Marvel World of Heroes release date

Marvel World of Heroes is scheduled to be released sometime in 2023.

However, beyond this wide window, no other details have been provided. That said, the official website explains that “MARVEL World of Heroes will soon be entering soft launch and will initially be available in limited markets for beta testing. Throughout the soft launch period, we will be testing and iterating on the gameplay experience as we gather feedback from our beta testers.”

So, if you want to play ASAP, then go to the game’s official website and use your email address to sign up to receive notifications about the latest updates and information about the release where you live.

Requirements and other details

As we mentioned above, although Marvel World of Heroes is expected to come out in the coming months, Niantic hasn’t shared many other details publicly. That’s why we don’t yet have a list of minimum and recommended requirements for the game. However, what we do have is a very small initial list of confirmed characters:
