We addicts of games developed by Nitrome already knew the story of a certain sausage dog who can stretch endlessly. Lots of us have already enjoyed Silly Sausage in Meat Land thanks to its brilliant playability and unmissable artistic style from the studio. Now there’s a new sequel of sorts, this time bakery-themed. Silly Sausage: Doggy Dessert is the latest attempt from the developer at creating endlessly enjoyable releases.
Those acquainted with the first installment of Silly Sausage will already get the gist of things here, but we’re going to recap anyway: you play a sausage dog who can stretch its body to inconceivable proportions and has to beat levels full of obstacles and get you through the different check points along the way. You’ll move around the horizontal level by swiping: you can make your cute doggy stretch up, down, right, and left. Whenever you tap a wall, the dog contracts and goes there. The good thing about these controls is that you can play this Android with just one hand.
Anybody who’s ever played the legendary Snake will find similarities here. Silly Sausage: Doggy Dessert asks you to collect all the gems, which are your currency to buy the option to save your progress at the interspersed checkpoints. And if you don’t have enough gems, you can always watch an ad and save your progress like that. This is necessary since the smallest error and you’re back to your latest checkpoint: a graze from a bad guy, a tap from the ubiquitous spikes, or a choco-cherry exploding in your face. Basically everything on the screen wants to see you dead. And your flexy dog-body will be key in disappointing them.
The gameplay tests your skill at dodging, anticipating the dangers that loom ahead of you, and solving the small puzzles you find along the way. All done with the magic touch from Nitrome, who spoil us with their games that drip charisma and wit. Though it’s not particularly different from its predecessor, Silly Sausage: Doggy Dessert has some new features that we appreciate: quite tricky special challenges and big bosses at the end.
Silly Sausage: Doggy Dessert is a fun and complex game. It’s no bed of roses and it’ll likely be tricky to get the timing right of your extreme doggy stretches. But with 50 levels to it, you’ve got a long stretch ahead of you (pun intended) to get the hang of it.
