There’s no doubt that TikTok has become a worldwide sensation. And what happens when a specific format succeeds? Well, it doesn’t take long for it to be replicated. You may have already heard the name Kwai, also known as Kuaishou. This app, which works a lot like TikTok, already has 150 million users worldwide, excluding the Chinese market.
Although the app originated in Asia, the content has nothing to do with what you’d find in Douyin, the Chinese version of TikTok. In fact, the most popular content you’ll find is in Spanish, as the app is one of the most popular in Latin America. The reason is that, as we’ll see below, in some countries such as Mexico and Argentina, Kwai offers financial rewards both to users who upload videos and to those who watch them.
How Kwai works
In general, the app works basically the same as TikTok. The content is uploaded and viewed vertically and the videos only last a limited amount of time. To move from one video to another, you just have to swipe up or down.
The categories are the usual ones you’ll find in these types of apps: beauty, sports, tips, humor, music, dance trends, cooking etc. It’s also forbidden to share content that’s violent, related to toxic substances or that incites hatred; in general, anything that doesn’t comply with the rules of the service.
For those who want to create content, the app offers several editing tools. You can create duets with other users, playbacks or dubbing, as well as edit videos however you want with stickers, texts, filters or effects.
You can share the content from Kwai on other social networks such as Instagram or Twitter and on instant messaging platforms like WhatsApp or Telegram.
How to get started with Kwai
As with other social media, in order to use Kwai, you have to create a profile with a username and password. You can also log in using your Google or Facebook credentials. The first time you log in, the app will give you five categories to choose the content you’re most interested in seeing. Based on this information, the service will show you certain videos, although the suggested content will also change as you follow new accounts and interact with their videos.
Like with TikTok, you don’t need to create an account in order to view content. It’s only required to create and upload content; however, remember that if you don’t log in, your preferences won’t be updated and it’s possible that the content shown may not match your interests.
Differences from TikTok
One of the differences from the Bytedance app is that, according to Kwai, its algorithm is based on equal opportunity. No matter how many followers or likes you have, all videos from all users are shown equally to the audience.
Thanks to this democratization of the algorithm, revenue sharing for those who produce content is fairer. This monetization approach is the biggest thing that separates it from TikTok.
How to make money with Kwai
There are two ways to earn money with Kwai. One is by creating content, and the other, by watching other creators’ content. The second case is less common, as platforms like Instagram and TikTok pay users who make videos but not those who view them.
When you log in to Kwai, you’ll see a small gold coin at the top of the screen. When the coin is spinning, it means you’re earning a (very small) percentage of money for what you’re watching.
About 40,000 of these virtual coins add up to about $5, and for each video you watch, you’ll earn about 200 coins. This means that in order to earn about $5 you have to watch 200 videos. That said, the app only allows you to earn a maximum of 2,000 coins per day.
In addition, the service has a referral program that generates an individual code for Android users. When this code is shared and other users use it to sign up for the app, you’ll receive income based on the activity they generate.
Kwai is available in most countries in Latin America, Europe and Asia, but it can’t be monetized in every country. For example, if you access from Spain and want to earn money with the app, you’ll need to use a VPN. However, it is possible that the service may detect that your activity is unusual and could disable your account.
Also, keep in mind that you’ll be paid in the currency of the country you use as an access point and not in euros.
