Driving games tend go down one of two different lanes. They usually opt for a more technically authentic experience closer to simulation, or go the arcade route, where realism takes a back burner to make way for accessible fun. Fastlane: Road to Revenge clearly opts for the arcade world, getting so far away from realistic driving physics that it actually feels more like a sort of alien-killer disguised as a driving game.
The game is a bacchanal of endless destruction. Your mission involves getting as far as you can without your car ending up in a zillion pieces. To do it you have to wield the best weapon you have available: your own fingers. The controls in Fastlane consist of holding your finger down on the screen and moving your car in whichever direction you want/are able to go. The shooting is automatic, so all you need are good reflexes to dodge cars, missiles, and various other items… all while collecting tons of money and powerups that let you carry on evolving your car or get a new one entirely.
Fastlane is divided into several zones that usually wind up with a standard villain for you to defeat. As you make it past the obstacles, the opposition gets tougher and tougher and the evolution of your car gets more and more notable. Besides being able to level up your main weapons and armor, you can upgrade a secondary weapon and roll out the powerups you find along the way. And if not, you can always trade in your car for a new one – something that’s eventually indispensable once you make it to certain zones.
This is actually a shoot’ em up dressed up as a car game. Fastlane is a very fresh title sure to leave you wildly addicted thanks to its terrific game system and the lighthearted tone with which it’s all served up. It’s true that the title does get quite repetitive, but it’s still entertaining enough to bring you back to the track again and again. Plus its top-notch soundtrack is a pleasant surprise.
