Torchlight was a welcome surprise when it came out in 2009. The Runic Games studio was made up of some big names from Blizzard North including the brothers Erik and Max, fathers of the renowned Diablo saga. Hence why Torchlight has been deemed one of the spiritual successors of those early titles, beyond being one of the best ARPG/Hack and Slash to come out in recent years. All this makes the Western release of this adaptation to for Android devices a proper event. Torchlight: The Legend Continues can now be downloaded for free from Uptodown with no geographical limitations of any kind.
All the trademarks of Torchlight are still here, though obviously they’ve been adapted to better suit standards for MMOs on smartphones. You’ve got four classes to pick from that should be familiar to anyone who’s flirted with the saga (think steampunk engineers or the graceful Kitsune), though the customization options are rather skimpy.
As a good borrower of the Blizzard saga, Torchlight: The Legend Continues draws heavily on random content generation and the perversion of looting with percentages and indiscriminate repetition of routines to get that piece of equipment you’re missing. Different scarcity ranges for the equipment you get as well as the random appearance of special enemies make your voyage an experience that leans more towards a lottery than anything else. Nothing you haven’t seen and played a zillion times before in both the Diablo saga and the original Torchlight games.
The game has already been out for several months on the Asian market. In fact it was released by the Chinese studio Efun and internationally distributed by Perfect World. Hence why we’ve spent so many years hearing rumors about the game without any solid news. What we’re celebrating now is its Western release in English, which is good enough for even many of us non-native speakers to enjoy it in.
