The numbers are in and the trends are clear. This year has marked the inauguration of smartphones and tablets as the reining gaming platforms. In fact some 88% of traffic on Uptodown this year has been in Android downloads – up 10 percentage points from last year – with 1.3 billion downloads just for that operating system. We’ve now compiled all our data and put together a ranking of the most successful games of the year, including the top 10 most downloaded titles as well as the top 3 in each genre.
A category as unruly as it is interesting. If we have to put it into the adventure category, Pokemon GO unquestionably takes the gold, as even with the drop in downloads since its release at the end of the year it remains among the top three most downloaded titles. It’s followed by the inveterate Minecraft, which appears here because the demo of the Pocket Edition was taken off of Google Play, and the elegant martial arts/fighting game Shadow Fight 2.
Another classic is Subway Surfers, which continues to top our list of games of skill, where the endless runner subgenre enjoys total hegemony. The fun Hill Climb Racing comes next with its recently released sequel, while the second installment of Temple Run has supplanted its predecessor with equal success.
Not many changes in this category since last year. Interactive animals from the Outfit 7 studio dominate with My Talking Tom and My Talking Angela, accompanied by the tireless virtual pet Pou.
For the third consecutive year the development studio King beats all the competition to smithereens. Following the invincible Candy Crush Saga are several variants that successfully deploy the same formula with minor changes. In fact we could even think of Soda as an extra pack of levels for Candy Crush.

For the first time in the history of Uptodown, EA and its FIFA saga don’t top this category of the annual downloads. This year that honor goes to Dream League Soccer from the studio First Touch: the main appeal of this free-to-play football manager over the competition is that it works properly on older devices. The odd thing to note in this category is that FIFA 14 is still among the top downloads thanks to the fact that it can run on devices with Android 2.3 or higher.
The hegemony of Supercell studio is incontestable in this section. After the triumph of Clash of Clans and similar releases like Boom Beach, at the start of 2016 they launched Clash Royale, a spinoff of its greatest hit adapted to MOBA gameplays for smartphones. Its success has been emphatic considering that it’s among the five top downloads.
