Dice have been an essential element of RPGs since the dawn of the genre. They add a necessary amount of randomness to the rules and the scenario set by the dungeon master, something that in video games has always been left in the hands of the AI. Slash & Roll merges both concepts —the classic dice and AI— to create an MMORPG for Android devices that’s as unusual as it is surprising.

This creation from the Polish studio Gamesture begins exactly like all the other games of the genre. This means you’ll start out by creating your character, choosing both the gender and physical appearance. However, when you get to the tutorial, you’ll discover that this is where the similarities with other MMORPGs end. The outcome of the combats is determined by the combinations you get when “rolling” three dice, found at the bottom of the screen.

SLASH & ROLL

Join the guild of your choice in Slash & Roll

Depending on what you roll, you’ll be able to get gold, a defensive shield, attack the enemy or launch a spectacular rampage. You’ll also be able to level up your character with the gold you earn, which will open new customization options. But what makes Slash & Roll really unique is that you don’t fight alone. Instead, you’ll get to join a guild of your choice which will face off against other guilds made up of bots and other players from all over the world.

Slash & Roll: Characters interaction

We’re not talking about simple confrontations here. These are long battles that will have begun before your arrival, and that will continue their course once you stop playing or run out of dice rolls. In Slash & Roll you’ll form part of a global conflict, and you’ll be able to choose which battle to join, aware that your effort, no matter how small, will have served to decide, in one way or another, the fate of your guild.

Slash & Roll: two battle scenes

20 vs 20 battles

Gamesture’s concept is really original, and perhaps a little disconcerting for those looking for a simple way to pass time for a few minutes a day. But the huge scale of the game, with 20 vs 20 battles, its depth (you can even “bribe” members of rival clans), and its beautiful visuals make Slash & Roll a really interesting game for anyone who’s ready to try something different within the MMORPG genre.

Slash & Roll: Different battles' results

A small example of the scale that Slash & Roll can reach is that it even includes an internal chat for each clan. This can be used to develop strategies and set combat schedules to ensure that there will always be a player in charge of keeping the enemy clan at bay. And it does it all with simple menus and controls that you’d expect in a game designed to be played on smartphones: you can manage everything with one hand. It’s not a game for everyone, but if you’re looking for something new and different to play on your phone, then you should definitely give it a try.
