iOS, Android, and Mac users will now be able to send video messages of up to three minutes in length to their contacts, improving the communication service that this famous video-conferencing program already offers. For now, this feature will only be available on Skype versions for Windows and Windows Phone, and there hasn’t been any news in regards to its future availability on other Microsoft platforms. There are more than 280 millions Skype users, many of which are Windows users, which is why we can assume that it won’t be long before they add this option to the rest of the operating systems.

Currently, Skype is offering its users 20 of these video messages for free, although the details as to its actual price once the free-trial is up remain a mystery. What Skype has revealed is that this feature will be included in its Premium user accounts.

The video messaging service works the same way as an automatic reply would – if you should try to get in contact with one of your contacts, and he/she doesn’t answer, your camera will appear and you can begin recording your message by clicking on the red record button on the screen. On Android and iOS devices, you can select which camera you want to use to record the message, and you switch between the front and back cameras as you record according to your needs. The Mac version even allows you to download the video in .mp4 format, an option that won’t be available for phones and tablets.

This feature is something for which those of us who use Skype have been waiting for quite some time, as other programs such as Tango started offering this feature over a year ago, not to mention the recent popularity of Vine, Twitter’s app for sending short videos. With more than 280 million users, there’s no doubt that in just a few months Skype’s video-messaging service will form part of our daily routine.

At the moment, it is only available in the U.K. and the United States, but it won’t be long before it is released worldwide, and surely it won’t be long for the Windows version to catch up, either.

Remember those false email chains that talked about how Hotmail and MSN were going to get shut down? Well, now it seems that it is actually going to happen. […]
