After almost an entire year of constant news, rumors, and leaks, January 19th had come at last, and along with it, the long-awaited launch of MEGA – the cloud storage system which has caused many headaches for its creator, Kim Dotcom.

You start using the service as soon as you open the official website by quickly creating a user account. Although the enormous amount of users makes the files take a while to upload, we can already confirm with big bold letters: MEGA IS HERE.

Mega cabecera 2 MEGA, Megaupload’s successor, is finally here

The official website, even without entering your personal information, allows you to upload files, but in order to access all of its features you have to register a username, email address, and a password.

Your registration will automatically be confirmed, and you can then access your inbox, where you will find some of the additional features that Dotcom had promised throughout the previous months.

MEGA is translated into 32 languages, which you can select from the drop-down menu in the upper right-hand corner of the screen. Once you register, you’ll be given 50GB of cloud storage space completely free. If you need more, you can register for any of its paid accounts for a very affordable price:

– Pro I: 500 GB storage space and 1 TB of bandwidth for $9.99 per month.
– Pro II: 2 TB of storage and 4 TB of bandwidth for $19.99 per month.
– Pro III: 4 TB of storage and 8 TB of bandwidth for $29.99 per month.

In addition, there is a 17% discount to any of the three services if you pay for a yearly subscription.

The free service includes many features in addition to file storage, such as a social feature that includes a contact list of people within MEGA, the ability to send and receive email from your message inbox, and a chat feature. The service recommends that you use Chrome as your browser, as MEGA works almost entirely off of HTML5, although it is compatible with the majority of previous versions.

You can organize your uploaded files into folders, and manage them remotely. You can also open and edit certain files from within the service itself, as MEGA includes its own word processor and spreadsheet feature, in addition to a calendar. The uploaded files are instantly encrypted as they are uploaded, increasing the workflow speed.
